The correlations analysis indicates that overall, Russia and Ukraine are really similar in cultural, socioeconomic, and political values (total correlation is 0.81 with a high level of statistical significance). In such categories, as child upbringing values, family and male-female relationship values, work-related values, social position, these two countries are almost identical.
However, there are also important differences that exist in some categories that can shed light on why the Ukrainian Revolution took place and why such a serious conflict could take place between these two nations sharing common values in so many categories. This is the reason why the rest of the chapter will focus more on the value items stemming from the categories with low correlations. The categories with lowest correlations are membership in organizations (0.61), worries (0.63), feeling as a nation (0.38), national goals (0.41), political action (0.59), and satisfaction with institutions and trust in institutions (0.12, and insignificant correlation). Ukrainians appear to be more politically active than Russians (they give higher scores on questions related to signing petitions, participating in demonstrations, joining boycotts, etc.); they are also more often members of different organizations, including civil society organizations, and are generally less satisfied with the government and countryâs institutions than their Russian counterparts. Therefore, before the start of the conflict, the Ukrainians had been generally more prone to revolutionary actions than the Russians. The Ukrainians also do not see themselves as part of a nation as much as Russians, which has been used to explain the divide between the East and the West of Ukraine and secessionist tendencies in Eastern Ukraine in the aftermath of the conflict. Furthermore, the priorities of the national aims of the two countries are rather different.
To make a more nuanced analysis, a comparison of particular value items was carried out. Figures 4.1 and 4.2 present the results of this analysis.
